I am primarily concerned with the broad subject of Roman imperialism. Most of the topics with which I engage pertain to cultural issues within the Roman world: expansionist mentalities, influences that Roman mores had (or did not have) on conquered peoples, and marks of resistance that existed among native populations. What interests me most is the very nature of empire – how it develops and changes over time. I am therefore also drawn to assessing imperial societies comparatively in an effort to elicit answers to the question of how an empire is defined, redefined, and understood by its contemporaries.
