From the earliest discovery of oil in America during the Civil War\, citizens saw the resource as the nation’s special blessing and its peculiar burden\, the source of its prophetic mission in the world. To the present day\, the oil industry’s leaders and workers together have fundamentally transformed American religion\, business\, and politics—boosting America’s ascent as a preeminent global power\, shaping modern evangelical Christianity\, fueling the rise of the Republican Right\, and setting the terms of today’s political and environmental debates. Dr. Dochuk’s sweeping history\, based on a decade of research in dozens of archives\, transforms how we understand the relationship of Christianity and oil to American history. \nDarren Dochuk is Associate Professor of History at Notre Dame University. His first book\, From Bible Belt to Sunbelt: Plain-Folk Religion\, Grassroots Politics\, and the Rise of Evangelical Conservatism (Norton\, 2010) won the American Historical Association’s John H. Dunning Prize and the Organization of American Historians’ Ellis W. Hawley Prize. Dr. Dochuk’s second book is Anointed with Oil: How Christianity and Crude Made Modern America (Basic\, 2019). \n\n  \n URL: LOCATION:Upper House\, 365 East Campus Mall\, Madison\, WI\, 53715\, United States CATEGORIES:2020,All Events,History Events,U.S./North American History GEO:43.0729002;-89.3990393 X-APPLE-STRUCTURED-LOCATION;VALUE=URI;X-ADDRESS=Upper House 365 East Campus Mall Madison WI 53715 United States;X-APPLE-RADIUS=500;X-TITLE=365 East Campus Mall:geo:-89.3990393,43.0729002 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
